Background: The Hippodrome on the corner of Charing Cross Road by Leicester Square tube is a vast casino with restaurant, bars and theatre. Originally a Variety theatre, where those treading the boards included Charlie Chaplin, Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland, with spectacular circus and aquatic shows under a retractable roof, plus ballet performances too. In 1958 it was revamped as The Talk Of The Town nightclub where Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr, Spike Milligan and Shirley Bassey starred. Following a period as a burlesque venue, the show La Clique, discovered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2008, won an Olivier Award. After a £40m refurbishment, the Hippodrome Casino including a restaurant, six bars, a smoking terrace and cabaret theatre was opened in 2012 by Boris Johnson, Mayor of London.
